Backpacking the Wild Azalea Trail

Anyone around here familiar with this National hiking Trail south of Alexandria Louisiana? That’s where I’m at right now!

I’ve had a fierce hankering to do this trail for a while now but haven’t gotten around to it so I figured to make a long weekend of it. Reports of trail length are variable, ranging from 24 to 31 miles. I’ve even seen two different lengths mentioned in the same trail pamphlet.

I suspect some folks are including the trails around Kincaid Lake in the overall 31-mile estimate. It appears, though that the trail from Woodworth Louisiana parking lot down the Wild Azalea trail is right around 26.6 miles (1.7 miles from town to trailhead and 24.9 miles from terminus to terminus.)

I am going to be attempting a solo there-and-back with a possible side-trek to Kincaid lake (depending on stamina and time) for a total of 50-60 miles over the course of 4 days and 3 nights. Should be an adventure – stay tuned!

In the mean time, here are a couple of nicely-made video collages of the Wild Azalea trail to make you jealous!
